A man in Chengdu, Sichuan province, has been fined 2,000 yuan ($275) for attempting to pay a 10,000 yuan debt with bags of coins, an action the court deemed as a deliberate attempt to hinder the execution of the court order and waste judicial resources.

The case originated in September last year when the man, identified only by his surname Wan, failed to fulfill his obligation under a court order. The applicant, surnamed Wang, applied for compulsory execution, leading to a settlement agreement between the two parties. However, Wan continued to delay fulfilling his obligations.

In March, Wang applied to resume execution proceedings. Following further court mediation, Wan agreed to pay 20,000 yuan to settle the case and paid half the amount on that day, promising to pay the remainder within two days.

When the deadline arrived, Wan appeared at the court with bags containing over 2,000 10-cent coins and scattered paper bills. Wang refused to accept the payment. Bank staff were then called in to count the coins, spending nearly three hours to determine they amounted to 8,489 yuan. Over 1,400 yuan in coins, many of them damaged, remained uncounted.

The Chengdu Longquanyi District People's Court ruled that Wan's attempt to pay with bags of coins was a deliberate obstruction of the execution process and a waste of judicial resources. However, considering that Wan eventually paid the remaining amount and expressed remorse, the court fined him 2,000 yuan.

Wan paid the fine in full on the same day.
